Production Update #2: Transcribe, Transcode

July 25, 2016 Michael Panik
And we’re back with another (much more informative) production update. Here’s what we’ve been up to: I, Michael, (This is Michael speaking.) broke my foot. It’s a long story, and it’s been an even longer recovery, but in that time, a new life has come over me, and about this project in particular. I’m very excited as it has led me to embark on a new journey, which I’ve Twitter-deemed #MichaelBecomesAnEditor.

In Which Jay Writes The Great American Novel

March 12, 2016 Michael Panik
Admittedly, we haven't talked too much about the third voyager on our savage journey to the heart of American thrifting, Jay. Jay, acting as cameraman, pack mule, moral support, and fight deterrent, was essential to the success of our trip. I could probably say a lot more about Jay Dial, but I'll leave it at that.

Production Update #1: Have We Given Up?

March 7, 2016 Michael Panik
Okay folks, time to spill the guts and come clean a bit. I know a lot of you had your suspicions, but it's time to come right out with it: Making a movie is hard. Yeah, I know. That's gonna be hard to swallow for most of you, but i...

Time Goes Both Ways

October 28, 2015 Michael Panik
At some point, everyone has a moment in their life to look back and reflect on where they've been. I could almost guarantee you'll have more than one. Why are we so bent on referencing the past? What causes humans beings to be nostalgic? Let's get to that in a minute. We're back.

(0 Days To Go)

July 13, 2015 Michael Panik
It seems there's a flaw in the great mess that is our fine English language; there is no word to describe the way I feel in this moment. It's understood, that when making a leap such as this, the emotion exists. I imagine many a person has stood in a church corridor, waiting to say "I do," and felt quite similar. So many who have shipped off to their first tour as a soldier have felt this in excess. The player preparing for his first major league game, the soon-to-be-freshman walking into orientation, and the kid going in for that first big kiss have all felt it as well.

The State of the Symphony (33 Days To Go)

June 8, 2015 Michael Panik
Holy cow. We have a month left to go. Okay, now that I'm back from an hour in the fetal position, we go boldly forth. Let's talk about some things. We didn't make our Kickstarter goal. So what does that mean? Well, only that we're broke. We didn't fail. It's not over. We're not dead yet. We just didn't reach our Kickstarter goal. So, we are broke. That's not good. But things, I always find, seem to work out. In honor of Jurassic World's premiere this week, I quote the great Dr. Ian Malcolm.

Bury Me in Walmart (62 Days To Go)

April 26, 2015 Michael Panik
...and we're back! Sorry for taking a blogging break last week, folks, but I was busy taking our Kickstarter campaign live, and most of this week was devoted to pushing and pushing and pushing it. In the first week we've reached nearly 10% of our funding. It's not huge, but it's something, and as we gear up for promotional events and more, we'll reach our goal, no doubts. We DID become a Kickstarter Staff Pick on our third day live, which is a big honor.

The Unexpected Virtue of Relaxation (76 Days To Go)

April 13, 2015 Michael Panik
Well, I guess this week is the week. The Kickstarter campaign is going live! I'm excited, I'm terrified, I'm nervous, I don't know what to do with my hands. I've never done this before, but I feel pretty good about it. I've seen many projects get funded that were asking for a lot more money from a lot fewer people, so I'd say we're doing things the right way. But it's still gonna take some mad promotion and word-spreading to get those backers in.

The Big Green Elephant (84 Days To Go)

April 6, 2015 Michael Panik
I have a lot of thoughts right now. I think it's been one of those weeks. A lot can happen in seven days. This week we finished filming for our Kickstarter campaign video, which will also serve as a nice 3 or 4 minute visual intro to TSS as a whole. We did some talking head and performance footage at my very talented friends' gorgeous Something Beautiful Studio & Design, as well as some action shots at Eagle Rock Thrift n' More, where we got way more than we bargained for.

Say Goodbye To Hollywood (91 Days To Go)

March 30, 2015 Andrew Panik
Hey! I know you haven't really heard from me yet, but I'm Andrew (you know, “brains, brawns, buttered toast”? Yeah? Never mind.) I'm writing this post because I did something new this week (and because Michael was too lazy too this week): I went to California; Los Angeles, if you want to get specific. I learned a few interesting things in my travels: 1) Southern California needs more thrift stores, 2) You actually can spend $20 at IHOP, and 3) Traveling is important.

7 Ways You Can Lend A Hand, with GIFs. (98 Days To Go)

March 23, 2015 Michael Panik
OH CRAP DID I JUST TYPE 98?! Ninety-eight days. That's terrifying. I'm gonna be honest: planning and running something like this gets...a little stressful. Those that know me pretty well are laughing right now, because of how many times I've completely freaked out in the last couple of weeks. It's easy though. Everything is so up in the air, but exciting, but terrifying, and the roller coaster continues.

Wait...What is Thrift Store Symphony? (105 Days To Go)

March 16, 2015 Michael Panik
I've been blogging a lot of nice encouraging things that have come to me week to week, and the feedback's been good, but for today, I want to strictly talk about Thrift Store Symphony. By now you understand the idea: two weirdos from Alabama are going to travel all over the place and make music in thrift stores while documenting it. Is that weird? Yeah, that's weird. However, [comma] what you have to understand is what this means. And there's a lot of meaning, I promise. And sorry, but yes this is a listicle.

Welcome to Journal Entry 3! *crowd cheers* We’re inching ever closer to a couple of big dates, which I’ll bring up later on. I’m more optimistic and excited about TSS than ever before. There are a lot of really exciting things in store for us all, and it only gets better from here.

From Junk, Beauty. (119 Days To Go)

March 1, 2015 Michael Panik
“Hold up, hold up, hold. 119 days? Last time it was 89? What direction are we going here, Michael? ARE YOU A TIME TRAVELER?!” Well first off, yes. Yes I am. I am a time traveler who is very bad at math, and gravely miscalculated how many days remained in my last post. But I’m

Another Point of View (89 Days To Go)

February 17, 2015 Michael Panik
So. My first journal entry. The first entry in the journal. For the trip. The trip journal. Which I am journaling in. Here we are. Sitting on the precipice of an adventure you’ve been sitting on for more than 7 years is nothing to huff at. In a way, you could say TSS is something I’ve wanted for even longer than that. I can’t say the exact moment when the idea came to me, but I remember being 11 years old and wanting to travel all over the country and see how other people lived, so at least 11 years I’ve been waiting for this summer.
